On Aug. 6, the Atlanta rATLers girls under seventeen (U17) team won first place in the Ultimate Youth Club Championships (YCC) for the second time since they joined the tournament three years ago. Out of their 20 players, seven are Paideia students.
YCC is a nationwide tournament where top ultimate frisbee teams compete. Four teams from Atlanta competed: the rATLers, ATLas, cATLanta, and ATLians. Out of Atlanta’s four teams, the rATLers performed the best, placing first in their division. Paideia sophomore and rATLer team captain Ashima Gandhi ’26 is leading the team in assists, followed by Paideia students Eva Gartland ’27 and Hazel Hughes ’26. The other captain of the team is Paideia student Amiya Bhattacharyya ’26. The rATLers practiced all summer in preparation for YCC. The tournament posed as a learning experience for players for whom it was their most competitive ultimate competition. The skills they acquired will be useful in the coming Paideia ultimate season.
The captain of Paideia’s girls ultimate team, Groove, Ava Zagoria ’24, said: “I’m proud of all the sophomores who played in YCC this summer. They did a fantastic job; seeing the Groove representation was great. Plus, they won!”
