Atlanta’s cold season this year has been off to an interesting start. Paideia students everywhere noticed that November days felt colder than usual and air felt sharper and less like Atlanta’s usual sunny days.
Luckily for those who enjoy snowy days, winter climate change could bring more snow and rain all over the United States. “A slightly warmer but still below freezing temperature can also produce more snow than during extreme cold, so some areas might see more snow as temperatures rise,” writes Simmone Shah in an article from Time Magazine. This explains the flurries students saw all around campus on Nov. 7, and it seems we have many more to come. This year, everyone needs to be prepared for a shorter winter, where the frigid weather comes and goes quickly.
Paideia’s head of school, Tom Taylor says, “I’m always reluctant to leap to close school too quickly because when we close it puts our elementary and half-day families in a bit of a childcare pickle. Of course, there is something truly joyful about having a snow day, so we need to keep that in mind as well!” It seems that although Taylor is not a fan of the snow due to his upbringing in Minnesota, he is focused on the well being and joy of our community and is not against snow days. In past years, Taylor has faced backlash for not calling snow days, but given these factors, calling a snow day is not an easy decision. Hopefully this year Paideia can enjoy a quicker, snowier winter and be fully prepared for what is to come!
