The highly publicized New York mayoral election was also a success for the Democratic Party. The candidates were Republican Curtis Sliwa, Democrat Andrew Cuomo and Democrat Zohran Mamdani. According to NBC New York, about three-quarters of New York’s voters under 30 cast their vote for Mamdani, and 2 in 10 Mamdani voters were under 30, while voters for Sliwa and Cuomo skewed much older. Although the older candidates held favor with older residents of New York, Mamdani pulled through with a win on Nov. 4. Mamdani held 50.4 percent of the votes, while his competitors, Cuomo and Sliwa, held 41.6 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively. Mamdani is the first Muslim person of South Asian descent, as well as the youngest in a century, to hold the position. “My friends, tonight we have toppled the political dynasty,” said Mamdani as he celebrated the win with his supporters.
In the New Jersey race for governor, Democrat Mikie Sherrill beat Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli by over 14 percent This was the highest turnout for an election for New Jersey governor since 2009.
Virginia also had a Democratic sweep in the race for governor. Abigail Spanberger won by 14.6 percent against Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. Ghazala Hashmi also managed to win Virginia’s lieutenant governor race, winning by 11.1 percent of the vote against Rep. John Reid. Hashmi has become the nation’s first Muslim woman elected to hold statewide office.
Additionally, Mississippi Democrats successfully flipped two seats in both the State Senate and House, reducing the Republican majority in the legislature.
