On New Year’s Day, the driver of a pickup truck drove at a high speed down Bourbon street, killing 14 people. The driver, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was killed by the police before any other attacks could occur. As investigators viewed the truck, they found a black ISIS flag flying from the rear bumper of the truck. The FBI called the attack an act of terrorism.
Leading up to the attack, Jabbar posted five videos on Facebook. From finding out this information, law enforcement authorities reviewed videos he posted, phones, laptops, that were potentially linked to Jabbar. Hattie Gegax ’25 went to New Orleans only days after the fatal attack. “The French quarter was a lot quieter than usual and there were signs and memorials to the victims,” Gegax says.
