Artificial Intelligence is reshaping our world. From worries of job loss to academic integrity, many institutions are banning AI, being completely opposed to it instead of investigating how it can be used to help humans and make daily tasks easier.
In my opinion, the whole concept of AI is to improve efficiency in every aspect of life. Some companies, like Booking.com, are using AI to answer specific questions for users browsing their website. Traditionally, users would either have to call an agent or make sense of the website and sort through it themselves. Now, people looking to book can ask an AI chatbot property-specific questions, and the chatbot will scan traveler reviews and photos and property listings to find the best deal and the best match for the client. This makes the clientele experience much more convenient, and drastically reduces the amount of time it takes to find a property.
This is not a sponsored ad for Booking.com. This is just one example of how AI can make tasks that can take hours, even days, take half the amount of time, therefore increasing efficiency. The advancements made possible by AI are the kind of thing students should be encouraged to learn about and take advantage of, and school bans take away that opportunity. However, academic integrity is a large and tricky issue that makes many schools not want to incorporate AI into their institutions. Specifically, AI can be adapted in so many ways and can make it tempting for students to rely on it instead of completing their work themselves.
Students are aware that these chatbots exist, and instead of pretending that they do not, schools should provide their students with guidance on how to use AI responsibly. I believe that if schools like Paideia teach students how to use AI chatbots as a tool instead of a crutch, AI would be able to make students’ lives much easier.
