On March 18, The Atlanta Girls’ School (AGS) announced they will be closing at the end of the school year on May 24. The school explained the reasoning behind the closure is due to financial issues because not enough students registered for the next school year. This left the board with no choice but to close the school. AGS had already been struggling financially after the pandemic, but nobody thought they would have to shut their doors. This news came abruptly to teachers, students and parents.
Many students attending the school are unaware of where they will attend next year with such short notice, and families’ worlds have been turned upside down. Juniors, especially, are focusing on college and are now unsure what school they are going to attend for their senior year.
The deadline to apply to schools has passed, making it difficult for AGS students to find a new school for next year. The Paideia School has extended the application deadline for AGS students alone. Other schools are also trying to extend their application deadline
A junior attending The Atlanta Girls’ school, Hayley Baines, says, “I’m shocked it all happened so fast … My home is shutting down.” Baines is in disbelief like all the students, feeling as if she is losing her “home.”
