In recent weeks, yet another riveting twist has come to light in one of Trump’s biggest court cases. Trump campaign official Michael Roman asked the court to disqualify Atlanta District Attorney (DA) Fani Willis, Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade, and the entire DA’s office over a romantic relationship Willis has since admitted to having with Wade. Besides the possible conflict of interest, Trump’s legal team is claiming the relationship may involve misused funds. Trump prosecutors are alleging that Wade used over $650,000 to take Willis on trips to Florida, California, and cruises in the Caribbean. Willis responded in court with a 167 page document which states “unequivocally” that there is no reason that she or anybody else in her office should be removed from the case.
Willis states that while she hired Wade in November 2021, their relationship did not begin until 2022. However, Wade filed for divorce with his wife of 26 years, Joycelyn Wade, the day after Willis hired him. While there seemed to be no proof of legal wrongdoing between the two, many legal ethics experts disagreed on whether Willis should have to step away from the case.
However, in a file submitted on, Feb. 23, Trump’s legal team submitted a request to enter new evidence that included phone records beteween Willis and Nathan Wade earlier than Willis admitted their relationship began. Willis’ office said that the phone calls were not “[proving] anything relevant.” However, after a judge ruled that the previous filings against Willis proved no grounds for disqualification, Trump’s legal team is hoping to take Willis off the case with this filing. If they succeed, Trump will have one fewer court case to worry about as he campaigns for president.
